In this years DARPA Challenge they have increased the prize from 1 million to two-million. The rules are simple to build a vehicle which can go from point A to point B without a driver, without remote control, without any help whatsoever and if that is not tough enough they have to do it in very hot, dry and bumpy terrain. It is great to see DARPA usher in a whole new era of robotics. This technology will be used in the military, manufacturing, search and rescue, planetary explorations and transportation. In fact much of this technology is already finding itself into under sea unmanned vehicles, border security vehicles and even unmanned aerial vehicles.Along this same theme, I propose another contest with a six-month window one, which will yield a million dollar prize. A contest, which is needed now in the security of IRAQ and will make the roadside bombs obsolete; I propose that a device be build which can sense a roadside bomb and steer around it. I propose that this device cost under $3,000 to commercially build in bulk. I propose that it be connected to the steering column of a Humvee. After all those teams who did not make it, have another chance to compete, if they fail their technology will be blown up, this signifying that the DARPA Challenge is serious business and not all fun and games. As long as we are having contests for things our military needs to complete the mission of the Future Fighting Forces, then surely we can find technologies which are needed right now and expedite the heck out of them. We did it in World War Two, because we had to do it to survive. Why not take that same level of motivation in the form of a 1-million dollar prize and add it to the "Bonus Round" of DARPA Challenge in February 2006 and then build them, ship them and install them on our Humvees in Iraq. Think about it; think about a Bonus Round.Lance Winslow - Online Think Tank forum board. If you have innovative thoughts and unique perspectives, come think with Lance; www.WorldThinkTank.net/wttbbs/
