Upon reflecting, the summation of life is often a culmination of special memories. Yes, I realize that it is far more including ones that we would as soon forget. A return visit after decades to a childhood vacation spot allowed me to relive some joyous moments. Such opportunities seldom come along, and when they do, they are often a major disappointment. But my return to Lakeside, Ohio lived up to the memories. I grew up in a family filled with love, a wondrous gift that I wish every child had. A better childhood could not have been had.Despite that knowledge, I often looked upon friends with envy when they spoke of their travels. Since my father owned a business, we seldom were able to take traditional vacations. Thus, when Mom and Dad announced that we would vacation along Lake Erie, my three sisters and I were amazed and excited. Despite the fact that the lake was only 90 miles away, that did not matter. I had only heard of this mystical body of water in school and from friends. Besides, we were even allowed to bring along one friend. I credit that vacation as a major epiphany within my life. The seeds of curiosity and adventure were sown on that visit to this church resort upon the lake. Recently, when I returned overnight with two friends and stayed in a small cottage in the tranquil environment of this Methodist resort, I again returned and savored those memories of youth. I again saw twelve year old Bobbie, one of my first fantasy girls, giggling with her friend; my deceased father taking my reluctant hand up the convocation steps; David, the now millionaire stockbroker, was again my best friend; and the Lake Erie islands a few miles offshore that wetted my adventurous appetite, still beckoned.I hope each of you have your own Lakeside memories that you can recall in times of need to bring that secret smile to your face.Bob Casey is a poet, writer, educator, speaker, and presenter.
