We all have goals in our lives. We may not call them goals or recognize them as goals but we all are striving to accomplish something in our lives. Others know what they want in life and set goals. They develop a plan to accomplish those goals and put them into action. In either circumstance when we accomplish something it is as Solomon said in Proverbs 13: 19, "The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul."Encouragement comes from accomplishment. When you put forth the effort necessary to attain the first step it bolsters you to continue. Each step you complete gives you greater confidence to persevere until you have reached your goal.The reverse is true. If you never reach a goal you will not have any joy in your life. You will continue on a day to day basis doing what you have always done. In the second part of Proverbs 13: 19 it says "but it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil."The goal all Christians should have is to be like our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You should strive to conform your life to His. Each time you get the victory over some area of your life that was not pleasing to God you are encouraged. It brings a joy to your heart. It is like a burden has been lifted and you can look to the next area of concern. You know that with God you can accomplish anything.When we are not willing to follow the leadership of Holy Spirit in our life the opposite is true. Defeat after defeat comes into our lives. We try hard to do the right thing but we can not overcome the problem.You can not play in the same mud puddle and expect to come out clean. Only when you are willing to put your trust in God, to listen to Holy Spirit that is in you, will you be able to overcome the problem and be free from it. You must be wise and "depart from evil."Most of the time, when you mention "evil", people think about some "big bad sin". Sin is sin in God's eyes. There are no big or little sins and anything that is not in harmony with His Word is evil. You must know and follow God's Word if you expect to accomplish anything, of lasting value, with your life.You can be an over comer. Nothing is this world is more powerful than the almighty God who created it. Greater is He that is in you than he that is the world. No matter what you are attempting to accomplish do it for the glory of God. Be sure your motives are God centered and not self centered. God will give you the victory.You should desire to please God with your life. When you have accomplished that desire it will be "sweet to the soul".Warren L. Adams is a preacher, teacher and mentor.
