There is an old adage "knowledge is power". In part this is true. Without knowledge many could not rise to the top of the social economic & political ladders. However, not everybody aspires for monetary and/or political gains. To some the idea of being an erudite by itself is completely inspiring. Taking this three step approach helps both sets of people. We live in a society inundated with data. Some of it is specialized knowledge and some broad based. Heck, putting together a basketball hoop set requires a plethora of knowledge. Something as simple as meditation requires specific techniques. Imagine the information needed in sophisticated technologies such as medicine, astronomy, & computers.Agreed, knowledge is absolutely pertinent for a "successful" life. How do we get it and keep it?Like the waltz the answer is a three step.1. Acquire
2. Discern
3. KeepThe "three step" appears simplistic, but many fail because of lack of resources (tools & time) & the sense of being overwhelmed.Knowledge can be acquired by various sources. It can be heard through friends, media, speeches, lectures, etc. It can be read through books, magazines, papers, etc. Finally it can be experienced. At times the data comes to you unintentionally. Be careful not to be randomized by the copious amount of data streaming your way. Most of time setting a goal to learn something in particular is best. Focus on a task or piece of knowledge before seeking it. This will help discern data.Discerning data requires subjectivity. Your approach may be sequential or chronological. This is the easiest approach because steps or dates dictate what information is needed. Event driven is more difficult because information will strike from many directions. If possible create an event tree. Remember to stay focused. In the act of gathering & discerning data, distraction and curiosity detracts from mastering anything. Find a quiet place to focus. Some people thrive with music. Try whichever keeps you hone in.It is efficient to document your findings. A photographic memory will do. However, if you're not part of the elite population with a photographic memory, employ a tool. A knowledgebase is an excellent tool. In it, cause and effect or step-by-step findings will be maintained. Furthermore, it can be used to obtain and master another milestone in your quest to increase your knowledge. In the knowledgebase categorize carefully to make retrieval accurate. The "infoBox" by BuildnSurf (http://BuildnSurf.com) is an easy tool to maintain the immense amount of knowledge that we build.BuildnSurf was born out of the need to organize the multitude of data that we wanted to track. Quickly realizing that notepads of unrelated data was causing more confusion than growth, a fresh approach was needed. Other knowledge base applications seemed expensive and cumbersome. The infoBox was developed to house, categorize, and recall all the information that an individual or group had acquired. The genius is in its simplicity. At BuildnSurf, we are passionate about improving the lives of people in a fast paced world.
