Recently I had the honor of speaking in Ireland to the Sales Institute of Ireland's annual conference.I spent over a week there meeting people in a variety of sales and sales management positions and it struck me after only a few days as to why Ireland has one of the most flourishing business climates and one of the most prosperous economies in the world today. Let me share with you why I believe this culture is headed for greatness in the near future.1) The Irish are the friendliest people I have met in all of my world travels.2) The society is one of the most courteous, gracious and helpful I have ever encountered.3) They believe in the tremendous importance of continuing education. They invest in themselves and
their skills to ensure their continued success.4) They have a powerful work ethic.5) They play hard and work hard.6) They believe in the power of mentoring and helping everyone improve their skills and abilities no
matter who they are.7) They go the extra mile.8) They maintain balance in their lives.9) They believe in the power of positive relationships.10) They communicate with integrity and empathy.11) They value everyone no matter their station in life.12) They balance the need for economic growth with responsibility to the
future of the environment and their health of their community as well as a
commitment to excellence.13) They maintain a spirit of optimism no matter what is going on around
them.I could go on, but suffice it to say as I was walking in and out of the post office this morning in the small college town I live in, I passed no fewer than 5 people who acted as if I didn't exist. I said good morning to each of them and they all acted as if I had the plague.As I was passing through town waiting for the red light to turn green the person behind me honked their horn the minute the light turned green. And we wonder why we have some of the problems we do in this country.If you want to enjoy enduring and satisfying success you might want to take another look at the above qualities.Please keep in mind that even though I am Irish, my observations were not prejudiced in any way.My hope is that the Irish people never lose their wonderful qualities and that we as Americans would some day learn from their example.Tim Connor, CSP is an internationally renowned sales, management and leadership speaker, trainer and best selling author.
