Jimmy Died

Author : Deborah Coss
6/30/2004
Jimmy Finnegan Died -
With a needle in his arm,
Cuz he could not take another day.
And so he left us behind,
And followed his sweet poppies all the way.
I once thought of him, like a leprechaun,
With a boyish grin and joking way,
But he tried so hard to not let you in.
And if you got too close,
He'd add another dodge and spin.
Always one step ahead, just so he would win.
He tried hard to act like he was having a ball.
But it was just a show, cuz he had already lost it all.
11 Years prior, he lost his sweet Mary to the same disease.
Then he lost his kids, and all his worldly things,
And next was his will to carry on and get healthy and strong.
He loved to drink and raised all kinds of hell.
He'd like you to know, he played the mouth harp pretty damn well.
He was a builder and he could build just about any damn thing,
Except a life for himself, that would give him some kind of peace.
You know, I'd like to say he was a friend of mine,
But he was finally getting lonelier and lonelier and more and more unkind.
Well, where I come from today, we say the ones who give us trouble,
Are the ones who need more love, so love them twice as much -
Love 'em double!
I know that he does not hurt anymore,
His spirit is finally at peace and no broken heart - no more.
He's up there, dancing a jig, cuz he finally got free from the curse of the rig.
Jimmy Finnegan Died - with a needle in his arm,
Because he could not take another day,
And he followed his sweet poppies home, all the way….
